Sheoldredthe Whispering One

Sheoldred was the praetor of New Phyrexia’s black-aligned Steel Thanes, a covert manipulator who ruled through sleeper agents and whispered secrets. Three cards show her: Sheoldred, Whispering One (2011), Sheoldred, the Apocalypse (2022), and the transforming Sheoldred // The True Scriptures (2023), which depicts her final battle.

Who she is

The MTG Wiki describes Sheoldred as “the Praetor of the Black Faction of New Phyrexia” — graceful, cruel, and the cleverest of the Steel Thanes, who earned her rank by turning the other thanes against each other.

Body
A feminine humanoid torso locked into an access inlet on top of a huge-mouthed, many-jointed fiend body covered in corroded metal plates. She can shed the lower body and skitter off to a new one, speaking through its mouth while attached.
Method
Covert and underhanded, relying on lies and misinformation. She kept informants everywhere and hid knowledge inside whispering puzzle boxes called “astral coffers.” Her main tool against other planes was the sleeper agent.
Philosophy
Of all the praetors, hers was said to be the closest to Old Phyrexia’s: power acquired by any means necessary, enslaving believers and unbelievers alike.
Domain
Ruled the Dross Pits on New Phyrexia, where she ran a coliseum, until Elesh Norn laid waste to it.
Status
Deceased. Beheaded by Ajani Goldmane on Elesh Norn’s order in 4562 AR — the first known death of a New Phyrexian praetor.

Her story

Sheoldred rose by outmaneuvering her fellow Steel Thanes on Mirrodin, lost her domain to Elesh Norn, and spent the rest of her story as Norn’s rival — sent on distant, dangerous missions to keep her out of the way, until a bid for power finally got her killed.

  1. Steel Thane of the Dross Pits Sheoldred

On Phyrexianized Mirrodin, Sheoldred is one of the Seven Steel Thanes, warlords of the black faction who each secretly intend to seize the whole plane for themselves. Using knowledge and secrecy as her weapons, she outsmarts the thane Roxith, who dies trying to force open one of her astral coffers. She establishes her territory in the Dross Pits and runs a grand coliseum there.

  2. Defeated by Elesh Norn Sheoldred Norn

Elesh Norn lays waste to Sheoldred’s domain. Sheoldred goes on to serve under Norn during Phyrexia’s invasions of other planes, but remains a powerful enough rival that Norn deliberately sends her on these missions to keep her occupied and distracted.

  3. Arrival on Dominaria Sheoldred

Sheoldred travels to Dominaria seeking ancient artifacts and, potentially, conquest. Damaged by the journey through the Blind Eternities, she recuperates in the Caves of Koilos, where Karn discovers her being rebuilt by the planeswalker Rona and the Society of Mishra. She mass-produces sleeper agents that infiltrate Dominarian societies across the plane, resurrects the wizard Ertai, compleats the planeswalker Ajani Goldmane, and leads the attack on the Battle of the Mana Rig while affixed to a dragon engine — capturing Karn and carrying him back to New Phyrexia.

  4. Return to the Dross Pits Sheoldred

Tezzeret carries Sheoldred back to New Phyrexia and her lair in the Dross Pits after the Dominaria campaign.

  5. Rebellion against the Mother of Machines Sheoldred Norn

Within weeks of returning, Sheoldred moves against Elesh Norn to seize power, allying with Urabrask’s rebellion alongside fellow thanes Geth, Roxith, and Vraan. Norn declares her an apostate, and she is captured by Ajani Goldmane.

  6. Death Sheoldred Norn

As Elesh Norn launches the Invasion of the Multiverse, a defiant Sheoldred is brought before her. Norn declares there is no place in New Phyrexia for those who seek power over unity, and orders Ajani to behead her with his axe. He does. It is the first known death of a New Phyrexian praetor, and the MTG Wiki says the effect on the black faction is “currently unknown.”

This timeline rests on one primary source, the MTG Wiki’s Sheoldred page, itself built from citations to the original Wizards of the Coast story chapters. A StarCityGames recap of the Dominaria United story agrees on her arrival in the Caves of Koilos and discovery by Karn, with no contradictions found.

Playing her as a commander

Sheoldred, the Apocalypse is by far her most played build, leading 12,272 decks on EDHREC — built around wheel effects (830 decks), lifegain (562), raw card draw (341), group slug (311) and combo (261). Sheoldred, Whispering One leads a much smaller 1,246 decks, mostly reanimator strategies that abuse her graveyard-return trigger. Sheoldred // The True Scriptures is Commander-legal but EDHREC tracks it under its front face. EDHREC counts decks of every pod size, not 1v1 specifically.
